Flexibility and sustainability were fundamental for the development of the design for Carré, a building on the Twente University campus, which implements a variety of classrooms, laboratories as well as an open and multifunctional study space for the students, moreover extra offices and a social space for the employees.
After rethinking the layout for the offices and classrooms, the main focus became the study landscape. The idea was to interrupt the rigid structure of the previous corridors with an open and welcoming space, which, divided by a corridor, it consists of an open dynamic and flexible space with loose furniture on one side and an enclosed pavilion for more silence and focus on the other.
This area is now representative of the faculty and create a new surprising and intimate feeling for all. By choosing durable materials such as bamboo and carpets made with recycled materials, curtains made from ocean plastic waste and acoustic panels made from end-of-life cotton and wool sourced from fashion and textile industries, along with reusing some of the existing elements the character and meaning of the project was determined.
